SOP on Storage of Flammable Liquids
1.0 Purpose: This SOP describes the guidelines for storage of flammable liquids.
2.0 Scope: This SOP applies to all the stores staff and operating staff in production.
3.0 Responsibility: Production Chemist to ensure that procedure is followed.
4.0 Materials and Equipment: As required
5.0 Procedure:
5.1 The quantity of flammable liquids in any work room shall be minimum required for process or processes carried on in such room. Flammable liquids shall be stored in suitable containers with close fitting covers, provided that not more than 20lts of flammable liquids shall be kept or stored in any work room.
5.2 Flammable liquids shall be stored in closed containers and limited quantities in well ventilated room which are isolated from remainder of the building.
5.3 Effective steps should be taken to prevent leakage of such liquids into drains and to confine any escaping liquid within safe limits.
5.4 No waste material of a flammable nature shall be permitted to accumulate on floors and shall be removed at least once in a day or shift, and more often when possible.
5.5 Effective steps shall be taken for removal or prevention of accumulation in the air of flammable dust, gas, fume or vapour to an extent which is likely to be dangerous.
