Introduction

Hairs are thin strands of hardened protein packed into layers, which grows from follicles found in the skin. Hair is made up of protein called keratin, which forms the structural foundation of hair. Hair is an important part of the human body. Hair serves various functions, including insulation, protection against external elements, sensory perception, and as a means of social and cultural expression. It’s a complicated structure made up of various morphological components that work together as a whole. The cuticle, cortex, and medulla are the three primary sections of a mammalian hair shaft. The medulla is present in coarse hair, such as grey hair, thick hair, and beard hair, but not in fine children’s hair.

The structure of a hair strand typically consists of three main layers:

Cuticle: The outermost layer of the hair shaft, composed of overlapping scales that protect the inner layers of the hair from damage and moisture loss.

Cortex: The middle layer, which contains most of the hair’s pigment (melanin) and provides strength, elasticity, and color to the hair.

Medulla: The innermost layer, which is present in some, but not all, hair types. It is a soft, spongy core that may contribute to the hair’s overall strength and flexibility.
