SOP FOR CLEANING OF GLASSWARE USED IN QUALITY CONTROL LABORATORY

1.0 OBJECTIVE

1.1 To
lay down a standard procedure for cleaning of
glassware used in Quality Control Laboratory.

2.0 SCOPE

2.1 This procedure
is applicable for cleaning of glassware used
in Quality Control Laboratory.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY

3.1 Executive/Officer – QC.

4.1 Head -Quality Control.

5.0 PROCEDURE

5.1 General
Glassware

5.1.1 The
used glassware shall be kept in the designated plastic container labeled as
´Used Glassware for
cleaning.

5.1.2 Used
Glassware shall be washed with plenty of raw water.

5.1.3 Glassware
shall be scrubbed adding soap solution and washed properly with raw water
till the soap solution is removed.

5.1.4 Subsequently
glassware shall be rinsed with purified water.

5.1.5 Finally
the Glassware shall be rinsed with Acetone and dried at 40 0C.

5.1.6 After
drying the Glassware shall be removed and stored in their designated places.

5.1.7 If
any stains or other contamination observed in the glass ware, pipettes,
burettes & other glassware shall be soaked in
hot dilute Nitric Acid for 4 hours to remove stains or
other contamination in the glassware.

5.1.8 Finally
the Nitric Acid treated pipettes, burettes and other glassware shall be rinsed
with Purified
water followed by Acetone and dried at 40 ºC .

5.2 Pipettes
& Burettes

5.2.1 Pipettes
and burettes shall be flushed with running water under the tap.

5.2.2 At
least half of the burette or pipette (by sucking with bulb) shall be filled
with the soap solution and rinsed thoroughly
by rotating the pipette or burette.

5.2.3 Wash
properly with raw water till the soap solution is removed.

5.2.4 Subsequently
follow the same steps as in 5.1.3 to 5.1.7

5.3 HPLC
Vials (auto sampler)

5.3.1 Glassware
such as auto sampler vials shall be first soaked in raw water, followed by soaking
in soap solution.

5.3.2 Subsequently
glassware shall be rinsed with purified water.

5.3.3 Finally
the Glassware shall be rinsed with Methanol and dried at 40 ºC.

5.3.4 After
drying the Glassware shall be removed and stored in their designated places.

5.4 GC
Vials

5.4.1 After
the completion of analysis de – crimp the vials and discard the solution.

5.4.2 Follow
the same steps as in 5.3.1 to 5.3.2.

5.4.3 Collect
about 800 ml of purified water  in a 1000
ml beaker and immerse the vials in the water.

5.4.4 Heat
the beaker on a heating mantle, till the water starts boiling. Continue boiling
for one hour.

5.4.5 After
one hour of boiling, discard the water from the beaker and the vials.

5.4.6 Dry
the vials in a hot air oven at about 110 ºC, keeping them in inverted position
in a stand.

5.4.7 Cool
the dried vials and transfer them to a poly bag and label the poly bag as `Cleaned vials for ready use , sign and date.
